Man affects women

A man has disrupted the status quo of women’s poker by gaining qualification for the World Series of Poker Ladies Championship in Las Vegas.

On Monday, a poker playing social media user took to X to tongue-in-cheek congratulate the culprit, Albert Ng:

Congrats to Albert Ng user albiexchewy for winning the @wsop Satellite to LADIES Championship #70. So @Kevmath does he have to pony up the other $9k entry fee since it’s a direct entry? pic.twitter.com/J1WCOw4OZl

Ng made the cut for the WSOP event after coming first in a satellite event.

Ng, who won the qualifying event going by the username “albiexchewy,” beat 50 other entrants to gain a seat to the Horseshoe Las Vegas-hosted Ladies No-Limit Hold’em Championship on Thursday.

Nevada’s anti-discrimination laws prohibit casinos from banning men from entering a women’s poker event.

Players question Ng

With just days to go before WSOP’s Poker Ladies Championship begins, Ng’s entry into the fold has set the online poker community at odds.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal “several poker players spoke out against Ng” taking part in a tournament intended to be for women only.

Double WSOP Circuit event winner Angela Jordison summed up the mood online with a plaintive:

what are we doing here guys”

Jordison was responding to the viral post by @Elanit, who also asked if Nevada would stick to the rules and make Ng pay the remaining $9,000 entry fee.

The X user was referring to the rule that while the ladies event had an official $10,000 buy-in, women enjoyed a 90% discount and pay only $1,000.

The WSOP confirmed “that men are required to pay the $10,000 buy-in regardless of whether they enter using the WSOP+ app or at the cage.”

No-man’s land

Reports reveal Ng once won a WSOP event and has pocketed nearly $288,000 in career live tournament earnings.

While PokerNews.com revealed Ng “declined to comment if he knew the satellite was for a ladies event,” he has earned himself a place in the record books for going where only few men have dared go before.

Ng now shares the spotlight with David Hughes and Abraham Korotki, winners of Ladies No-limit Hold’em events at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown and Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City in 2023 and 2009 respectively.
